This course is for level one new students for Humanities students. It focuses on basics of grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners will have the opportunity to develop the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) based on the input of level A1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework Reference). By the end of the course, learners are expected to achieve A1 level of the CEFR.

This course is designed to familiarize students with the study of word meaning and use in natural language. By "meaning" we refer to the communicative contents of words and combinations (semantics), and by "use" we intend to capture how meaning is constructed and interpreted in discourse, and what kinds of additional or non-literal interpretations may arise from context (pragmatics). Students are introduced to some core concepts used in the analysis of meaning and context-based interpretation: dentation, reference, quantification, propositional meaning (compositionality), presupposition, speech acts (illocution, perlocution), implicature, and context vs. contextual domain.

It focuses on selecting a study topic, formulating inquiry questions, organizing and writing a literature review, and selecting appropriate research designs and methodologies for data collection and analysis. It is a sequential course, in terms of students are guided, (step by step), to conduct a research paper that will be submitted at the end of the semester once the study is completed. In summary, the course helps undergraduate students of English become novice researchers.

This course emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between practice and scholarly study.
